Application Of Worm Screw
One of the main transmission mechanisms most used in all
mechanical projects. The worm offers simple operation and mechanical
advantages. The worm meshes with the helical gear in such a way that the
helical gear rotates with a single tooth each time the worm rotates completely.
Therefore, for the helical gear to rotate completely, the worm must be rotated
by the number of teeth of the helical gear.
Worm screws are used to transmit 90 ° of force and movement
between two vertical axes. In other words, this translates the radial movement
of the x axis into the radial movement of the y axis.
Features of worm
Screw:-
- Very low transmission ratios allow significant reductions
in tight spaces.
- Achieve irreversible mechanisms. That is, you cannot drive
in one direction.
- The output shaft can be rotated.
- As an inconvenience, the worm mechanism generates a great
loss of energy and, therefore, experiences a significant loss of performance.
Applications of a
worm screw:-
1.Automatic door
system:-
Such a system (right and left) requires one-way movement and
the system locks at the end of the race. The door closes every time you touch
the worm, so you can use this mechanism to open and close the door. More
specifically, the system is locked due to helical gears.
2.Musical
instruments:-
Worm screws can usually be found in the tuning system of
guitars, violins and other string instruments. Its considerable mechanical
strength allows tension in July with little effort.
3.Plastic worm screw
mechanisms as speed reducers in small motors:-
This resource is typically used to provide a large speed
reduction in a small size.
4.Lifts: Worm screws
are also used in lifts or screw conveyors:-
The device includes a fixed or variable pitch wide spiral
screw that rotates inside the housing to move the product from the inlet to the
outlet end. See this presentation for more details.
5.Automotive steering
systems:-
One of the automobile steering systems has a worm screw as a
basic component. In this system, the worm is in constant contact with the
straight gear. The screw is connected to the steering wheel through the
"steering column", which is connected to the steering arm. Thanks to
this mechanism, every time the steering wheel is turned, the car wheel rotates
at a constant angle, depending on the gear ratio in use.
6.Speed reducers:-
Helical drive speed reducers offer considerable transmission
ratios in tight spaces, which makes them widely used in a variety of industrial
applications. Meanwhile, the transfer of movements is carried out at 90 °,
which allows the transfer to be carried out at a right angle.
As a disadvantage, the worm
gear reducer is subject to greater friction due to sliding, which leads to
higher operating temperatures and higher energy consumption.
When talking about the type of worm drive, you can name some
as helical worm, single-sided screw, vane screw, hourglass screw and long pitch
worm.
Engagement between
the worm screw and the worm gear:-
There are three main characteristics for the correct
participation between the two components of the worm unit.
Gear ratio: It is
important to measure the ratio of the angular velocity of the screw (drive
gear) and the helical gear (drive gear).
Propeller angle: the
screw propeller and the worm gear must be in the same direction, and the sum of
the propeller angles must be equal to the angle between the axes.
Distance between
centers: the base cylinders must be in contact with each other. This means
that the distance between the centers of the helical gears is equal to the
diameter match.
